Basically it's about having a system in place that captures leads online then places them into a pipeline which is manged by sales people, or an automation process based on what the prospect does.

I get asked two questions all the time: How do I get leads and how do you automate everything?
To answer the first question, it depends on your business. Having a newsletter is NOT lead generation. Lead Generation is all about giving in exchange for something that can become a lead i.e. an email or phone number in exchange for something you know or can giveaway. My free lead machine is an example of this. I earn nothing from showing you how to build a lead machine - not a cent. However, if you decide to buy the software that automates everything then I get paid. My example is probably on the extreme side of 'giveaways' as I'm passionate about lead generation for small business. So you need to take a step back and look at how you are going to ATTRACT this is the first phase.
If you don't have a website then you should watch this short video. I'll walk you through step-by-step how to find a domain, what system to use that requires no programming and is easy as 1,2,3! I find wordpress to hard to use and I'm always asking programmers what to do. This system is so easy if you can send and email then you will be able to use this.
WHAT IS ATTRACT ALL ABOUT?
Once you've landed a lead (and remember leads come in all shapes and sizes) how do you go about converting them into a sale?
Just a name could be enough to get started, however some businesses do require more information such as a phone number, name and email. What happens next is the key part - you need to educate or what I call 'date' for a while. You can't rush in and say, ' lets get married' it just does not work like that. You need to create an experience that connects the buyer and guides them through a solution. You need to answer their questions, address their concerns (blog, email or social media) and then you need to make an offer, just like asking 'would you like to go on a date?'
